Otodus is the genus name for a variety of Megatooth Sharks (Family Otodontidae); which are widely excepted to be the sister group to the True Mackeral Sharks (Family Lamnidae). Sharks in the Genus Otodus, which are known from fossils around the globe from the Paleocene to the Pliocene, include species such as the famous Megalodon (which, among others, were previously placed in the seperate genus Carcharocles). Otodus sharks are known to have grown to large sizes, from 20-40+ feet, and would have preyed on a wide variety of animals from large fish to small whales. O. obliquus is an early species that could grow to size of around 30 ft.
